Bed Bugs

Emergency Services-Bed Bugs

With a combination of several techniques over a course of a minimal two visit treatment, our bed bug program enables us to have a very high success rate to eliminate even the worst infestation. Working closely with our clients to allow them to be a part of the solution, provides a faster, quicker way to eradicate bed bugs when using a conventional approach.

Unfortunately, bed bugs don’t respond to normal pest control measures. While regular pesticides may kill any exposed bugs, these small, flat insects can hide in furniture crevices, bedding and even books until the threat is past. Add in the fact that pesticides don’t take care of bed bug eggs, and you could have a serious problem on your hands. While bed bugs don’t carry any diseases, they do produce an irritating, itchy rash. They also make it hard to feel comfortable at home.

What Not To Do When You Find Bedbugs?

Don’t panic.

Do not apply pesticides — You are legally liable if you misapply a pesticide, or apply it without a license to the property of another (including common spaces in apartment buildings). Generally, landlords, owners and building managers cannot legally apply pesticides. They should, instead, hire a licensed pest control operator to confirm the infestation and to develop an integrated pest management plan.

Do not dispose of furniture that is useful. Infested furniture can be cleaned and treated. Placing infested furniture (particularly mattresses) into common areas or on the street may simply help spread bed bugs to the homes of other people. Infested furniture intended for disposal should be defaced to make it less attractive to other people. Officials in some municipalities affix labels to potentially infested furniture to warn of bed bugs. To reduce opportunities of infested furniture re-entering their building, building managers should ensure that any disposed furniture is locked within a dumpster or immediately carted away to a landfill or waste facility.

Bed Bug Bites

Bed bugs usually bite people at night while they are sleeping.

They feed by piercing the skin with an elongated beak through which they withdraw blood. Engorgement takes about three to 10 minutes, yet the person seldom knows they are being bitten. Symptoms thereafter vary with the individual. Many people develop an itchy red welt or localized swelling, which sometimes appears a day or so after the bite. Others have little or no reaction. Unlike fleabites, which occur mainly around the ankles, bed bugs feed on any bare skin exposed while sleeping (face, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, etc.). The welts and itching are often attributed to other causes such as mosquitoes.

For these reasons, infestations may go a long time unnoticed, and can become quite large before being detected. The possibility of bed bugs increases if the affected individual has been traveling, or had acquired used beds or furnishings before symptoms started to appear. Bed bugs also are suspect if you wake up with itchy bites you did not have when you went to sleep. Conversely, it is important to recognize that not all bites or bite-like reactions are due to bed bugs. Confirmation requires finding and identifying the bugs themselves, which often requires the help of a professional.

Are Bed Bug Bites Dangerous?

A common concern with bed bugs is whether they transmit diseases. Although bed bugs can harbor pathogens in their bodies, transmission to humans is highly unlikely. For this reason, they are not considered a serious disease threat. Their medical significance is mainly limited to the itching and inflammation from their bites. Antihistamines and corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce allergic reactions, and antiseptic or antibiotic ointments to prevent infection. Infestations also may cause anxiety, embarrassment, and loss of sleep.
